Autumn 2007 is now upon us and the woods of New Hampshire call out to me. I greatly enjoy the freshness of an autumn day as
I hike through the woods searching, not for treasures, but for the Autumn colors that hang above the forest floor.
It is easy to forget that we tread on potential HOT SPOTS. When hiking, be sure to be aware of the terrian beneath your
feet. I was walking along a popular trail here in Hampstead, NH not to long ago when a piece of glass caught my eye. I stepped
off the trail and began hearing crunching sounds coming from beneath my shoes. I bent down to pick up an early Hoods milk
bottle. Then I noticed the remains of more early glass. I wouldn't call this a dump site, but surely an old home site with
some early 20th century debris.
I found old asphalt shingles and a site that seemed to be bulldozed right through the middle. Leaving the sides of the
site intact. I made note of this area and will explore further before the first New Hampshire snow flake falls.
I once mentioned that I tend to find marbles at most sites, well, I look forward to one from this on as well. To find
something as small as a marble takes a lot of patience and a lot of methodical looking. What ever your method of search, take
your time and do the job correctly. Do not start digging blindly as this scars the site and just may end up breaking a find
that you wish wasn't broken.
Enjoy the Autumn season where ever you hail from and remember, no matter where you are hiking, something just may give
up its secret.
Read an interesting article about locating old bottle dumps on Cape Cod. Also, you can choose to listen to an audio version
of this interesting article.
